Design
Three design choices shape every quilt that leaves the workroom: the construction style, whether to use sashing, and the pattern stitched on the back. Each is a conversation with you.
Construction
Block quilts are even grids; Mosaic quilts have movement. Both are hand-pieced and built to last generations.
A clean grid: 3×3, 4×4, all the way up to 7×8. Best when the shirts are similar sizes, the logos are centered, and the look you want is orderly and symmetrical. The classic T-shirt quilt.
Irregular blocks that fit together like a stained-glass window. Best when the shirts vary in size, logos sit off-center, or the design includes unusual pieces like pocket tags, jersey numbers, and ties of different widths.
Sashing
Sashing is the thin strip of fabric between each shirt. It adds quiet white space around each block, makes the quilt larger, and reads as more formal. Skip it for a tighter, more contemporary look.
A thin band of fabric frames each shirt. Quilt is larger; the look is traditional and formal, perfect for gifts.
Shirts touch edge to edge. Quilt is smaller, design feels modern and packed.
The quilting stitch
Once a quilt top is pieced, three layers (top, batting, backing) need to be stitched together on the longarm frame. Those connecting stitches become their own kind of art.
Where most quilters use a plain grid, Kathy designs the quilting pattern to match the quilt itself: soccer balls behind a soccer quilt, baseball seams behind a softball quilt, gentle pebbles behind a school-spirit quilt. The front tells the story; the back tells you who made it.
